REI Relocated and Upgraded a Shred System for More Flexibility

When flexibility in your paper product recycling operations becomes a priority, the system has to evolve with you, and that’s exactly where REI comes in.

We were recently brought in to relocate an existing shred system from Tennessee, bring it back to life, and integrate it into a new operation in Pennsylvania. What started as a straightforward move quickly turned into a full system upgrade and expansion, giving our customer the ability to process multiple grades of material with greater control and efficiency.

How We Transformed the Complete System

This project went well beyond just relocation. Our goal was to create a system that could adapt, scale, and perform under changing material demands.

Here’s what we delivered:

  • We added a bi-directional discharge conveyor to feed two downstream balers
  • We installed a Harris American Company PAC 4029-830 baler
  • We reconditioned the existing Selco baler back to life with new liners, wear parts, and critical repairs
  • We fully reconditioned the REI DS 100 dual shaft shredder, including seals, filters, and cutter sharpening
  • We installed a new infeed conveyor belt, transitions, and safety bollard
  • We modified, integrated, and upgraded the system controls to ensure everything works together seamlessly

One of the biggest advantages we brought to this project was our ability to restore and repurpose existing equipment.

Instead of replacing everything, we:

  • Rebuilt the shredder to perform like new
  • Restored the Selco baler
  • Integrated both new and existing components into one cohesive system

This approach allowed us to deliver a high-performance system while helping our customer control capital costs.

New Shredding System Built Around Flexibility

At the core of this system is operational flexibility in a paper and cardboard recycling environment, and we designed it that way from the ground up. With the addition of the bi-directional conveyor and dual balers, our customer can now:

  • Process multiple grades of paper at the same time
  • Direct material based on bale requirements or demand
  • Reduce bottlenecks and improve throughput
  • Adapt quickly as material streams or market conditions change

The reconditioned 100 HP dual shaft shredder provides the power and durability needed to handle a wide range of materials, keeping the entire system running efficiently. View our used recycling shredders.

Whether you need to relocate equipment, upgrade an existing system, or build a fully integrated recycling solution, we design systems around your operation, not the other way around with one-size fits-all solutions.

From engineering and fabrication to installation, start-up, and ongoing support, our team at REI delivers solutions that perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Relocating a system involves far more than moving equipment. We handle disassembly, transportation, reinstallation, alignment, electrical integration, and system testing to ensure everything operates as intended in the new facility.

Yes, and in many cases, it’s the most cost-effective approach. In this project, we restored and upgraded existing equipment, including the shredder and baler, to deliver like-new performance without full replacement costs.

Relocation is the ideal time to improve system performance. Common upgrades include new conveyors, control system integration, wear part replacement, structural modifications, and adding new equipment like additional balers.

Adding a second baler increases throughput and allows facilities to separate and process multiple material grades at the same time, improving operational efficiency and revenue potential.

Timelines vary depending on system complexity, but combining relocation with upgrades in a single project minimizes downtime and ensures the system is fully optimized before going back into production.
