REI Raising Money for Homeless Teens

August 2015 – NEWTON, NC – Every year in the Catawba Valley, about 60 18-year-olds age out of foster care without a home to go to, and 80 to 100 youth are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. These young people are unlikely to finish high school, maintain their health, or earn a living wage.  Sipe’s Orchard Home’s Transitional Living Program provides the tools, opportunities and support these youth need to learn and practice successful independence. Designed for 17 to 21 year-olds, this program provides room and board, educational advancement, employment resources, transportation, recreation, and training in the life skills they need.  Sipe’s receives far more requests for this program’s services than it can accommodate. However, the Home’s board of directors has recently approved a plan which will expand this program and enable Sipe’s to serve twice as many youth in the coming years.  Sipe’s is a 501(c)3 organization.

REI is sponsoring its first Charity Golf Classic on Monday, September 28, 2015 to support the expansion of the Transitional Living Program of Sipe’s Orchard Home.  Golfers will enjoy a day of golf at Catawba Country Club, access to the driving range, lunch, dinner, player prizes and give-aways. All proceeds will go to Sipe’s Orchard Home.
